At the end of the 13th century, the sword ruled supreme as the primary weapon of Knights and Men-At-Arms. However, with the introduction of steel plate armor, the popularity of the sword as a battlefield weapon began to wane. You see, the problem was the sword couldn't cut or crush steel plate and had to be specially designed for use only as a thrusting weapon if it was to have even a chance at piercing plate armor. Enter the War Hammer- an ideal weapon for use against an opponent who is encased in plate steel. The heavy hammer head could crush the strongest helmet or suit of plate armor with just a few blows and the back spike could rip through helm and plate like a modern can opener and the top spine will stab through the persons heart! In battle, the hammer side was usually employed first to knock down and stun an enemy. Once he was on the ground, helpless, the hammer was reversed and the back spike was used to punch a hole through the helmet and deliver the coup de grace.

Now Special Projects brings you an inexpensive, yet highly effective, recreation of this awesome weapon. Weighing a little over 2 1/2 lbs., our War Hammer is highly maneuverable and can be easily wielded with one or both hands which serves four purpose: Stunning, Piercing, Stabbing and Deflecting Swords. The head is drop forged out of iron with a heavy  toothed head. This means the point of the spike and enormous hammer face are fully hardened so they can pierce and crush tough materials without failing while the rest of the hammer is left soft to absorb the shock of heavy blows. The handle of our War Hammer has been designed to be equally tough. Made of natural brown wood, the handle extends an enormous 21 1/4 inch long it provides tremendous leverage so enormously powerful blows may be struck. We have also added a 2 1/4 inch spike cap at the end of the handle, helping to protect the soldier from all attacks. At the top of the head is a 3 1/2 inch spike, enabling the wielder to use this hammer as a thrusting weapon. Looks like it should be behind glass in a museum! This weapon was very effective against full armor. This fully functions war hammer will be the jewel of your Medieval Collection.

I already owned a War Hammer when I made the decision to purchase the "Lucerne War Hammer". Both are functional but the Lucerne War Hammer far exceeds my other War Hammer in its functionality! There are six points of attack that are on the Lucerne War Hammer! And that is just the deadly parts of the weapon not the many combination of strikes you could perform. Other than it being named for the location it was discovered what makes the Lucerne uniquely different from other War Hammers is the additional spikes! Their were few weapons that would intimidate a knight in full plate armor & the Lucerne tops the list!!! With the addition of a butt spike, Top spike & a spike coming from the face of the Hammer, which was often flanged turns the Lucerne into a armor shredding nightmare! Although this weapon is very sturdy I could never advocate sparring with this weapon as it would easily rip through plate & chain mail combination and continue right through lacquered leather & cotton matting to flesh and bone beneath! Therefore I would reserve this for home protection only! And then only if you have a strong stomach. Some War Hammer's were mounted on very long pole's but I love this handle length as it makes for a devastating left handed weapon in combination with a sword. I have a nice collection of medieval weapon's & this has quickly become one of my favorites! If you were locked in a concrete block basement with a stainless steel door, you could bash your way to freedom with this hard core War Hammer in a short time! This is the best War Hammer I have seen available on the market today!!! Purchase with confidence!
