The Boken is a practice weapon for the Japanese sword arts. This weapon was used primarily for sparring and kata training. However, a boken itself is quite an effective weapon on it own. In the hands of an experienced kendo master a boken can be just as exact and devastating as an actual sword. In either case a boken is essential for training in most Japanese sword arts.
This is the newest style of boken. The earlier problem of the boken slipping when the hands became sweaty (as they will when practicing) has been solved by adding a cotton wrap around the handle of the boken. This addition, although small, has changed many aspects of the boken. This allows for practice of drawing techniques and a closer realism to a live blade.
Specifications:
A) The boken is constructed of oak with a shiny black lacquer finish.
B) The handle of the boken is wrapped in a tan cotton cord, just as a katana would be.
C) The boken has been constructed with a high detail to replicate the look and feel of a katana, with a kissak at the end of the tip and a pentagonal spine and blade.
D) This bokken comes brand new still in the wrapper and includes a plastic guard and securing ring.
E) Product Material: Wood
F) Overall / Blade Length : 40 " , 29.5 "

The Good:
It's strong, made of what appears to be weathered oak, one of the stronger woods avaliable. The nylon wrapped tsuka, or handle, is a very nice addition. Gluing it down will help it over a long period of time though. The rubber stopper for the tsuba, or hand-guard, it's really that loose, but I imagine if you keep putting it on and off, it will stretch. Very hard, stiff, and pretty darn durable too.
The Bad:
The tsuba (hand-guard) is a little small, and the nylon tends to become loose over a long period of time unless glued down. It's just a little bit short of a more modern-made katana too, about 39" where as normal is 40-42", not really a big deal. Other than that? Nothing, really.
The Verdict:
I'm impressed. $10 fully practical and functional bokken. The paint is very heavy and thick, it won't just scrap off as soon as you use it. Accurate shape and almost size, with the sick black look. If you cosplay or are looking for a really durable cheap bokken that is black, I suggest not hesitating anymore on this decision. Get it if you need or want it.
